My Diet Progression

My name is Douglas Burns. I am 36 years old and live on the West Coast. Several years ago, a friend of mine came down to where I work at the end of the work day and we decided to grab a burger together and chat. Walking to the restaurant we got talking about fitness and how we both wanted to get into better shape. My friend remembered that he had to buy something from the pharmacy that happened to be along the way we were walking. So we went into the pharmacy and as we were talking about fitness we decided to test our blood pressure on the machine they had at the pharmacy. My friend went first and his blood pressure came out to 172/110. He said something like ‘wow I do need to workout.’ Then it was my turn. Now I must tell you I was expecting my number to be on the high side, as I was quite overweight(and I could still lose some pounds today!). But I had been doing some hiking with my friends over the year and a half prior to this. My fitness had been improving, I was known for being able to walk extremely long distances. Although long hills presented a real challenge for me!I sat down in the machine and after a minute the machine came out with the reading, an idiotic 183/119. I was shocked to put it mildly. I decided to re-test my blood pressure several more times, incase it was an anomaly. Each time the reading came out to about the same. My friend did not seem too worried about either his reading or my reading, I guess he did not appreciate the seriousness of the problem.

I was pretty shaken up after that so I was not good company with my friend eating the burger. After that I drove home and got onto my computer and started researching hypertension. Luckily I had spent years researching other topics that I was interested in. I will often spend many hours evening after evening, reading and debating online about subjects that I am interested in. For me this reading is a form of relaxation, in the same way for other people watching tv or something like knitting is a form of relaxation. When you have spent years researching various things you get a sixth sense for how to mine and search for obscure information.

After a few days of research I had to admit to myself the seriousness of my hypertension. The urgent need to get it under control, before something really bad happened. I was talking to another friend about high blood pressure, as this had become my obsession, and I told him that my blood pressure was high. He asked how high it was, and I lied and said it was in the 150′s sometimes as high as 160. He looked worried, and told me that I really had to make an appointment with the doctor and the doctor would get me on the drugs. I told my friend that he is right I have to take this seriously. I had a bad experience with doctors years before so I decided to try a different path.

So I began researching natural ways of reducing blood pressure. And natural ways of actually curing the condition. I did a lot of research on many different minerals, vitamins, supplements, diets, exercise routines, breathing exercises. For example say you find there is evidence that a mineral deficiency of a specific mineral contributes to hypertension. Well how much of that mineral do you need to take. How do you know if you are deficient in that particular mineral? How do you know when you have saturated your body with that mineral and can move to a maintenance dose. How do you know what is too much of that mineral to take?

Well I started pulling the scientific studies, hundreds of studies and reading through them, and I started reading opinions of experts. There is no easy way really, I just had to dig deeper and put the pieces of the puzzle together. And then when I had come up with what appeared the best answer, to try that on myself and see how it worked. I started pulling these scientific studies that were done in the 1950′s and 1960′s that showed astonishing results with different combinations of vitamins and minerals actually cleaning out clogged arteries! Yet these studies simply disappeared into libraries in little read scientific journals! Because of course these micro-nutrients are not patentable. How many people have literally died, or suffered years of morbidity because money could not be made on these cures!

I began applying the research I was doing to myself. And my blood pressure did start coming down. Every few weeks I would discover something new and add it to my regiment. Some of the ideas I did not notice a difference, and some I noticed a clear difference. So I played around and researched more, both on the things I was using, and on new ideas. After 4 months my blood pressure was down to around 150/100. Serious progress had been made, and I was feeling a lot better about my blood pressure. It was still obviously high, definately in the hypertension range, but it seemed no longer so dangerous on a short term basis.

It was over the next 3 months that things really came together. I added a few new ideas to my regiment and refined other aspects given greater knowledge and time seeing how my body responded. And maybe most importantly the regiment was working. Things take time to work in the body. If you are reversing atherosclerosis it takes time. If your body is repairing the walls of the arteries, it takes time. Healing and building up the oxygen transport system takes time. At the end of this 3 months I started consistently getting readings in the 115-125 range for systolic blood presssure and 75-80 for the dialostic blood pressure.

From nuturing my body over these months there were other benefits to my body. My sex drive was higher and the low level headache almost all day every day for several years before I began treating myself were gone. My energy levels were probably twice what they were before. Many days before I began nuturing my body I would get home from work and go to sleep. And back to the brain front, not only were the headaches gone but the brain fog was lifted. Its amazing how many people you talk to, who say that their brain feels in a fog all of the time.

My blood pressure now ranges around 115 for the systolic and 70 for the dialostic. My pulse is usually around 50-55. Some people have even lower blood pressure, but for my body I have found this is the range it likes to be in. Once I rejuvinated my circulatory system and my blood pressure was healthy, then maintenance became quite easy. The maintenance doses needed of various vitamins and minerals is a lot less and you do not have to eat perfectly all the time. Look at young adults who still have healthy relatively pristine circulatory systems. They can abuse it quite a bit before any problems emerge. The body has amazing healing/regenerative abilities. Its when it gets pushed over the edge, it can go into a viscious circle. And that is where it takes some serious concious action to reverse course, and allow the body to heal.

The whole program I have is designed so that things work in a virtuous circle, making things easier as you go along. A little example is when you feel energetic it is easy to go for a walk with your friend. Going for a walk with your friend helps you lose weight, blood pumping, gives you more energy. The virtuous circle.

And the structure of the program makes it easy to follow. Of course it becomes really easy to follow when you see the strong progress being made. For most people when they know without doubt that the path they are on is working, staying on that path is a lot easier.
