Cure Alls

The Problem with Health Practitioners who think One Thing is the Cure All for every Ailment

One of the great sources of information that I mined was from doctors, naturopaths, chiropractors, other health professionals and passionate individuals who believe that one vitamin or mineral or herb or treatment of any type is the solution to nearly all ailments.  They have webpages full of fascinating studies and theories, anecdotal evidence, evidence from different nations with differing use of the say mineral for arguments sake.  And honestly it is amazing the difference that saturating the body with even one mineral that it is deficient on.  The scientific studies show dramatic improvements in health, by adding even one mineral.

Even in people who technically are getting enough of that mineral, according to the recommended daily allowance the studies show substantial alleviation of some ailments. In the guide I cover the difference between the minimum needed to prevent outright disease, which the RDA recommendations usually are, and the optimal dose.  The amount the body needs to function optimally.  And sub-optimal amounts over decades can lead to chronic conditions, as damage accumulates over time.

So while I have a lot of respect for these passionate people who are focused on one deficiency, and agree with and support many of their arguments, like the need to fortify food with the nutrient across the society, I find focusing on just one nutrient too narrow when it comes to treating a chronic health problem.

In this modern world of manufactured foods, nutrient depleted soils, artificial environments, all sorts of chemicals added to our water and foods, to name just some of the challenges, I think a program to heal the body needs to be broad.  We are living a million miles away from the environment that our bodies have evolved to live and thrive in.  So any program needs to include quite a number of nutrients that the body is deficient on, along with how to change the diet to nuture the body, and lifestyle changes.  And often these changes like to diet can actually add to the taste of food.  Like moving to healthy foods, with all sorts of spices and flavours is obviously not depriving a person of enjoyment of their meals!  And some of the spices having health benefits in their own right.

I have read other guides from passionate individuals and often their solution revolves around either supplementing one thing, or eliminating one thing.  So while a valueable piece of advice,  I do not feel those are the comprehensive solution that I have created.
