Now I am sure I am preaching to the converted here on how great berries are. But to just drive it in, I can’t help but rave about the different berries. It is almost absurd how good berries are for you. They are one of the paleolithic foods that ancient man evolved eating. People cannot believe how few calories are in berries when I tell them. The normal reaction is how are they so sweet then? They must be loaded with sugar.They do have sugar in them, but the berries have themselves been evolving for millions of years. Berries spread when animals eat them and then later where that animal goes to the bathroom, a new berry tree grows up. So berries have evolved to be as delicious as possible to attract animals to eat them, with the fewest resources possible used to create that attraction, aka sweetness. It is hard for food manufacturers to match millions of years of evolution.Let us take a look at just how much berries you can eat. An entire cup of my favorites, rasberries is 64 calories. You can have two cups of rasberries and that is only 128 calories, and quite a filling snack! Compare that to many cookies are 200 calories! Add in that the berries are full of many micro-nutrients and have lots of fibre.
A whole cup of cranberries is a mere 44 calories. You could eat 7 cups of cranberries to get the same number of calories that is in a large McDonalds sugar filled drink.
Blueberries actually have more calories than I would have thought comparing them to other berries, a cup of blueberries is 83 calories.
And then strawberries. 1 cup of strawberries is a mere 46 calories. Its amazing how sweet these things are for the calories in them.
